Early in my wellness journey, I started making my own personal care and cleaning products. Once I learned about all the toxins in products we slather all over our skin and use to “clean” our homes, I couldn’t continue using them. I’m a chapstick addict, so homemade lip balm was high on my list of priorities.
After losing my dad, which you can read more about on Instagram, I committed to eating better, living more mindfully, and making health and fitness central to my life. A big part of that was consuming local, organic products, but I also paid attention to household products I used to never think twice about. I converted everything in a single weekend, so you can also get my recipes for nourishing, anti-aging eye cream, safe and effective toothpaste, and anti-aging face wash with more to come.
For all of those kissable, lip balm required moments, here is a snippet from Sweet Redemption, my debut adult contemporary romance novel that I’m currently querying and pitching to literary agents. Don’t forget to check out my submission tips, craft advice, and chapter one of my Bridget Jones’ Diary meets Tinder trilogy, The List.

Before we get into my homemade lip balm recipe, what’s the weather like in your part of the world? We’re in a transitional season (you can read my fall bucket list here), so our weather is all over the place. I woke up to snow this morning, but now it’s sunny and beautiful outside. I don’t enjoy being cold (plus it makes my lips super dry – see what I did there?), but I do believe that seasonal changes do a body good.
Now onto the recipe!
Homemade lip balm
This homemade lip balm is creamy, smooth and effective. It uses only natural ingredients that you can feel good about it knowing it’s safe for your skin.
Ingredients
- 2 tablespoons of beeswax
- 2 tablespoons of shea butter
- 2 tablespoons of coconut oil
- 10 drops of essential oil of choice (I like vanilla, lemon, orange or peppermint)
Directions
- Put the beeswax, shea butter, and coconut oil into a double boiler and stir until melted and well combined
- Add in the essential oil (vanilla, lemon, orange or peppermint) if you’re using it and stir to spread it around
- Using a dropper, carefully insert the mixture into lip balm tubes or containers. You must do this before the mixture cools down or it will solidify again
- Let the mixture harder in the lip balm tubes or containers. They make great gifts!
